The next generation
Charles and his family returned to the UK in 1927. When his son ‘Pete’ left school he joined the RAF to be a career airman. He too was an engineer by trade and as ground crew technician his early promise was rewarded with promotion to Flight Sergeant. Towards the end of his career in the forces he was stationed for a number of years at RAF Waddington, taking care of the Vulcan bombers.
It is rather ironic to note that these aircraft which my father maintained, only ever flew one active mission in anger throughout their entire lifetime. That mission was to fly back down the Atlantic and bomb the runway at Stanley airport in defence of the islands of his birth.
